BJJ Gis

BJJ Gis Manufacturer From Your Academy's First Order to Your Brand's Next Collection

Whether you are an academy head instructor ordering your first set of branded gis for your students, or a gi brand founder scaling into your third production run the underlying manufacturing challenge is identical. The gi has to survive grip fighting, hold its shape after a hundred washes, and carry your identity in a way that makes a student or customer proud to wear it. Acticsports manufactures custom BJJ gis worldwide, working directly with academies, established and emerging gi brands, competition teams, and martial arts retailers. No agents in between. No generic blanks with a patch sewn on. Just a factory that understands gi construction and a process built to get your specification right the first time.

Three Ways We Work With You

Not every client approaches gi manufacturing the same way so our process adapts to where you are starting from.

If you are an academy ordering branded gis for your students:

You likely know your students, your colours, and your patch design but may not have detailed fabric or construction specifications. Our team will guide you through weave selection, weight, and fit options suited to your training population, then handle the rest.

If you are an established gis brand placing a production order:

You arrive with a tech pack, fabric specification, and exact requirements. We manufacture to your spec precisely, with the consistency your existing customer base expects from repeat purchases.

If you are launching a new gis brand from scratch:

You have a vision and a brand identity but need help translating that into a manufacturable product. Our product development team works with you from initial concept through fabric selection, construction specification, and sample iteration until the product matches what you set out to build.

What Goes Into a Gi That Survives the Mat

A gi fails in predictable places and knowing where lets us build accordingly.

The collar takes more abuse than anything else you own.

Every grip exchange, every collar choke attempt, every minute of standing grip fighting puts sustained tension through the collar before any other part of the gi. We construct collars with multiple internal fabric layers and dense padding, finished with stitching dense enough to resist collapse over years of regular grip fighting not just the first few months.

Shoulders and underarms fail under sudden load, not gradual wear.

A gi rarely tears slowly. It tears in an instant during a scramble, a takedown defence, a sudden change of grip. The seams at the shoulder and underarm gusset are reinforced specifically because that is where sudden directional force concentrates during live training.

Fabric that isn't pre-shrunk is a fabric that lies about its size.

A gi that hasn't been properly pre-treated will shrink unpredictably on first wash sometimes enough to change a fit from comfortable to unusable. We pre-shrink every fabric batch before cutting, so the size your customer orders is the size they keep wearing.

Pant construction takes a different kind of stress than the jacket.

Knees and seat absorb the weight of guard passing, base, and ground transitions session after session. Reinforced knee panels and seat construction aren't cosmetic upgrades they are the difference between pants that last one season and pants that last three.

Build Your Gi Spec by Spec

Step 1: Choose Your Weave

Weave Feel Best For
Pearl Weave
Gold Weave
Single Weave
Ripstop
Honeycomb
Balanced weight, breathable
Heavier, stiffer, maximum durability
Lightest available
Lightweight with tear resistance
Distinctive texture, mid-weight
Most training and competition use the standard choice
Competitors prioritising longevity over lightness
Hot climates, no-gi crossover training
Competition gi tops, gi pants
Brands wanting a visual fabric differentiator

Step 2: Set Your Fit Range

Adult standard sizing, women’s-specific fit blocks accounting for torso and shoulder proportion differences, and youth sizing scaled appropriately for junior practitioners all available within a single order or as separate product lines.

Step 3: Confirm Compliance Requirements

Tell us if any portion of your order needs to meet IBJJF or equivalent federation specifications fabric weight, permitted colours, jacket and skirt length ratios, patch size restrictions. We build to those parameters exactly when required, and skip the restrictions entirely for training-only product where they don’t apply.

Step 4: Specify Your Branding

Embroidered collar and lapel patches, back panel branding, woven size and care labels, custom colourways outside standard white/blue/black where compliance allows. Every branding element is built into the production process, not added afterward.

Step 5: Confirm Packaging

Individual poly bags, branded header cards, or full retail packaging configured to whether your gis are going to students across an academy counter or onto a retail shelf.

From the Academy Floor to the Competition Mat

Academies Building Their Own Branded Line

Your students train in your colours, with your academy patch, in a gi that holds up to the volume of training your programme generates. We help academies move away from generic blank gis with an iron-on patch toward a genuinely branded product their students want to wear outside the academy too.

Gi Brands Scaling Production

Whether you are producing your second batch or your twentieth, consistency is what keeps customers buying your brand specifically rather than whatever gi happens to be in stock. We maintain your approved specification precisely across every repeat order.

Competition Teams & Federations

Athletes competing at sanctioned events need gis that pass inspection without question correct weave weight, correct measurements, correct patch placement. We manufacture to exact federation specification so compliance is never a question on competition day.

Martial Arts Retailers

Retailers sourcing private label gi product for their own brand or store-branded range manufactured and packaged to retail standard, with full export documentation for distribution.

Multi-Discipline Combat Sports Brands

Brands producing across gi, no-gi, and MMA categories we manufacture rash guards and no-gi grappling apparel alongside your gi range, maintaining brand consistency across your full product line.

Real Numbers MOQ, Lead Times & Pricing Logic

Minimum order quantity: 30 pieces per style across your size range.

This reflects the genuine complexity of gi construction relative to standard apparel gis simply require more components and more production steps than a t-shirt, which is why the threshold sits where it does.

Sample development: 14–18 business days.

Gi samples take longer than typical apparel samples because of the multi-stage construction collar assembly, reinforcement application, pant construction each adding to the timeline.

Bulk production: 30–40 business days from sample approval.

Larger orders, multiple sizes, or extensive customisation extend this window. We confirm an exact timeline at quotation stage based on your specific order.

What actually drives your price per unit:

We provide a fully itemised quotation so you can see exactly what each specification choice costs not a single bundled number you have to take on faith.

Questions Academies & Brands Actually Ask

We're a small academy can we even order from a manufacturer, or are we too small?

Yes. Our minimum order of 30 pieces per style is set specifically to be accessible to individual academies, not just established brands placing thousand-unit orders. Many of our gi clients are academies ordering their first branded run for their own student base.

What's actually different between pearl weave and gold weave, in practice?

Pearl weave feels lighter and breathes better during training it’s what most practitioners train and compete in. Gold weave is heavier and stiffer; it lasts longer under heavy use but you’ll notice the extra weight, particularly in warm rooms. If you’re unsure, pearl weave is the safer default for a general academy order; gold weave makes more sense for a brand specifically marketing to competitors who prioritise durability.

Do we need to specify IBJJF compliance if our students mostly train, not compete?

No if your order is primarily for training use, you have far more flexibility on colour and design without compliance restrictions. We’d only recommend building to IBJJF spec if a meaningful portion of your students or customers compete at sanctioned events and need a gi that passes inspection without issue.

How much will our gis actually shrink after the first wash?

With our standard pre-shrink treatment applied during manufacturing, residual shrinkage after first wash is typically minimal in the region of 2-3%. This is a standard part of our process, not an optional upgrade, specifically because unpredictable shrinkage is one of the most common complaints about poorly manufactured gis.

Can you match a patch design we already have from our current supplier?

Yes. Send us your existing patch artwork or a clear reference, and our team will reproduce it to the same specification or refine it if you’re looking to improve on your current version while you’re switching manufacturers.

What's the actual difference in cost between training gis and competition-compliant gis?

Compliance itself doesn’t add significant cost it’s a specification constraint, not an upgrade. Cost differences come from weave choice and customisation level, which apply whether or not the gi is compliance-built. A compliant pearl weave gi and a non-compliant pearl weave gi of equivalent customisation are priced very similarly.

We want to launch a women's-specific gi line is that a completely separate production run?

It can be run as part of the same order if you’re launching alongside a men’s or unisex line, or as a standalone product. Women’s fit blocks account for different torso length and shoulder-to-hip proportions than standard unisex patterns this is built into the pattern development stage, not a modification of unisex sizing.

Our current gi supplier has inconsistent sizing between batches how do you prevent that?

Batch-to-batch consistency comes down to maintaining the same approved pattern, fabric specification, and quality control checkpoints across every production run which is exactly what going direct to one manufacturer for repeat orders protects against. We measure against your originally approved specification on every subsequent order, not a fresh interpretation each time.

Can kids' gis be ordered in the same run as our adult line?

Yes. Youth sizing uses the same construction principles as adult gis scaled fabric weight and reinforced stress points appropriate for younger training intensity and can be included in the same production order as your adult range.

We're not a gi brand yet, just an idea can you help us get from concept to an actual product?

Yes. This is exactly the kind of development work our product team handles regularly starting from a brand concept and working through weave selection, fit, branding, and sample iteration until you have an actual manufacturable gi that matches your original vision.
